Shawl Weaving Artisan - Textile Fibers and Safety

Identification of fibers by burning and microscopic test

Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
            • identify fibers with burning test
            • identify fibers with microscopic test.

              Requirements

               Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments • Eraser - 1 No.

            PROCEDURE

TASK 1: Identify different types of fibers with burning test

Refer Exercise No. 1.1.01 in Task 2

TASK 2: Identify different types of fibers with microscopic test
1 Take one small sample from the given samples. 9 Adjust the light source and focus.
2 Give identification code nos like 1,2,3,…6, to the 10 Look for the overall structure of the fibres, such as
fiber samples. their shape, arrangement, and uniformity.
3 Clean the sample to remove dust or impurities, if 11 Switch to a higher magnification (e.g., 40x) for a
necessary. closer look at finer details.
4 Place the fibre sample on a clean glass microscope 12 Observe the characteristic of given fibre.
               slide.
13 Note the fibre’s Surface structure (smoothness or
5 Than spread the fibre so individual strands are roughness), Diameter and uniformity, presence of

6 Add a drop of water or mounting medium to enhance 14 Take photos or sketch what you see under the

7 Gently place a coverslip over the fibre to flatten it 15 Remove the sample, clean the slide and coverslip.
               and protect it during observation.
16 Repeat the exercise with other fiber samples from
